No More BRT?

A follow up form a Blog Post in April.  It is reported that Philadelphians voted to abolish the Board of revision of Taxes (BRT) on May 18th.

If no lawsuits are filed then the BRT will cease to exist on October 1st, and it duties will be split up between two new city entities.

An Office of Property Assessment will take on the job of establishing real estate values for every parcel in the city.  The office will be run by a chief assessment officer, who must be a certified assessor with at least 10 years of experience, who will serve a four-year term and could only be fired for cause. Most of the BRT’s 160 employees would be transferred to this new office.

The other new entity is a seven-member Board of Property Assessment Appeals, which will operate independently of the Office of Property Assessment. Property owners who contend the city has gotten their assessment wrong will go before this board instead of the BRT to make their case.
