Philly Trash and Sugar Tax

As you may have heard, the mayor’s new budget proposal recommends a $300 trash fee per building and a biggest-in-the-nation tax on sugary drinks. This was announced yesterday.

I know that the city has a budget deficit but the $300 annual garbage fee is a quick and easy way for city government to increase property taxes, given the inaccurate real estate assessments provided by the Board of Revision of Taxes.

In my oprion this trash tax would get passed onto tenants, increasing rents in Philaldelphia and would hurt people that are on a fixed income.  Also, people that live by city borders will buy soda in the surrounding counties.

To register your opposition, below is the Phila.gov website with City Council members, the phone number, fax number, and office address. As a Philadelphia resident, you also get to vote for “at large” representatives….Call all at-large Councilmen as well as your own councilman.
